Bizarre issue here. I have a Seagate 2TB Backup Plus drive which has worked great for over a year. Two nights ago I upgraded to Windows 10.
Last night I discovered my half-full Seagate Drive was no longer showing up in This PC. I updated the Seagate dashboard, and it shows the drive, which appears now to be completely empty.
Also, the drive appears in the 'safely remove' menu in the SysTray. The weird thing is, I can't open the drive to view it. I checked Computer Management and see the 1800 GB volume (2TB minus a 200 GB partition for mac files) but when I right click and go to properties, I get the following message: 'The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh and try again, and if the problem persists please close and reopen Computer Management or restart the computer' I refreshed, reopened, and restarted, but the issue persisted. Panicking now, I ran a data recovery program and found most of my files, but they are mostly corrupted and unrecoverable. Since I can't use it, and can't recover the files, I decided to format through Computer Management as a last-ditch effort, but get the following error: 'An unexpected error has occured.
Check the system Event log for details.' The last message in the event viewer is that the device 'failed to migrate' which happened the night I upgraded. Even more odd is that I've been getting occasional blue screens with the error code 'badpoolcaller' which appears to be some sort of driver problem. I don't know if the two are related but it seems awfully coincidental. Can anyone tell me what to do to get this drive showing back up and usable again? This is pretty infuriating; my internal drive came through the update fine, but the external which houses my backup (and much more) was borked. Thanks in advance!
Hey there, jaymo1978-us. Unfortunately this is not the first case describing issues with an external HDD after a Windows 10 upgrade. Perhaps there are still some glitches and bugs that need to be cleared out of the OS.
I'd recommend that you try the drive with a different USB cable and a different computer (preferably with Windows 7 or 8.1), to see if you keep getting those errors. I'd also suggest that you download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool and run the tests, to see if anything alarming pops-up. Please let me know how everything goes. Thanks Boogieman! Well, I've now tried everything I can - I got Seagate's recovery tools and ran all of the tests and attempted reformatting every possible way. The weird thing is, all of the tests and advanced reformats were successful, but the problem persists.
It's like the system SEES the drive, but refuses to actually use it. Even more alarming - recent reports indicate that Win 10 has the ability to disable 'unauthorized' devices, based on a very vague wording in the EULA. It says: 'We may automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices.' The reason this troubles me: this drive is a Seagate 'Backup+ Desktop and Mac' which is marketed by Seagate as primarily a Mac drive, but which is compatible with PC. Since there's NO indication what 'unauthorized' means, could Win 10 have seen the drive's built-in Mac partition and viewed it as an unauthorized device, needing to be disabled?
Well, this shouldn't have anything to do with it. Even if it has problems with Windows 10 specifically, they're probably not related to unauthorized device usage. The drive is totally legit in terms of speaking and it's basically a hardware device which can be used with any system regardless of its OS. When an HDD is advertised as Mac drive or a Windows drive, this basically means that it's formatted with the HFS+ file system which is used by Mac OS X, or NTFS for Windows respectively (as you probably already know). So it's just a matter of formatting the drive with a specific File System, which shouldn't alert Win 10 as this being an 'unauthorized' device.
When you say you've tried everything, does that include testing the drive with a different computer with Windows 7 or 8.1? If you did that and still had problems with it, I'd recommend that you contact the drive manufacturer's customer support to ask for further assistance. This is pretty unfortunate indeed. If you do need data recovered from your drive, try out data recovery software - and If you have no luck with data recovery software, you could try accessing the HDD via Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if the drive is properly recognized and if you can get to your files. And finally, the most reliable solution of all - a data recovery company. Hope that helps.
Please keep me posted on your progress. Hi Babu5 and welcome to the community! It is possible for the OS upgrade to cause some problems with some drivers, resulting in the issue that you're experiencing.
I'd suggest that you backup your valuable data, just in case. After that run the HDD manufacturer's diagnostics tool to test the drive and make sure that everything's OK with it. If that doesn't prove useful, try updating the Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller's driver (on your Windows 10 computer) to see if that changes anything. Let me know how it goes. I have a same problem.
I have already upgraded to Windows 10 few days before. Yesterday, on, I got windows update again, and I have updated my OS.
Now When I connect my Seagate 1TB Backup Plus Hard drive to my Laptop, It won't detected. It was working fine in Windows 10, but not working since I got second time update of Windows 10. It just shows the option in Tray to Eject the device. I have also updated Driver from Device Manager and performed Troubleshooting, but Nothing can happen. I still have same problem. It can be detected in other OS but not in Windows 10 (in recently updated OS). Can Anyone give me exact solution.
I had success with the following: 1. Uninstall the Paragon HFS+ Software from Add/Remove Programs 2. Plug in the Seagate Hard drive. It is important for the external hard drive to be plugged in prior to running the software. 3. Right Click the HFS4win.exe file (the install file from Seagate) 4. Select 'Troubleshoot Compatibility' 5. Follow the instructions to reinstall the program 6.
Try the drive again When I selected 'Troubleshoot Compatibility', it suggested the best mode was 'Windows Vista'. I selected 'Test Software' and it ran the program without issue and I now have access to my external hard drive again. I did not need to go any further.

This is pretty infuriating; my internal drive came through the update fine, but the external which houses my backup (and much more) was borked. Thanks in advance! If you are running a dual boot on a Mac machine, and find this occurring, the fix is rather simple if you have the file type set at journal (shared). Journal is primarily for the Mac OS and when I upgraded to Windows 10 via Bootcamp, I found my primary desktop 2T External not displaying on the Windows File Explorer.
The OS recognized that there was a drive in existence, but it couldn't be opened or used in any way. The fix: Boot back in to Mac, MOVE all your files from the external in question, to a secondary external (oh you don't have an extra one? - Move the files to the Mac HDD then). Reformat the external to FAT32 and then RESTART the Mac, boot back into Windows, problem solved.
You will find your external is now displaying and usable in File Explorer. I used a similar method for my MacBook after losing the drive when I upgraded to Sierra.
The Paragon driver was removed during installation, so need to uninstall it. I downloaded the Paragon driver from this link: (Paragon Driver for Mac OS (10.9. And above) This driver provides write access for Seagate external drives in Mac OS without having to reformat.
Installed it after disconnecting my hard drive and restarted, then plugged the drive in. Everything came up intact as it was before OS Sierra upgrade installation. Hope this helps. Bizarre issue here. I have a Seagate 2TB Backup Plus drive which has worked great for over a year.
